Carol Butts '49, retired Lawrence University librarian and archivist, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at the age of 76.
Carol studied history at Lawrence with Professor William Harper Raney. She attended library school at the University of Michigan, and worked in libraries at Penn State and the University of Wisconsin, before returning to Lawrence in 1959. She worked as a cataloger until 1969.
After a brief hiatus (during which she was head librarian at Lakeland College), Carol returned to her alma mater in 1974 as Head of Technical Services. In 1979, Carol was named Assistant University Librarian and University Archivist, a position she held until her retirement in 1993.
In her "retirement," Carol was an active member of the Appleton Heritage Society, the city of Appleton Historic Planning Commission and many other organizations. She was a life member of the Wisconsin Academy and the Wisconsin Library Association.
