Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains records documenting the business operations and finances of Lawrence University, 1846 to the present. This includes records of fiscal agents, the Treasurer, Business Manager, Comptroller, Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs, and the Office of Financial Services. Materials include general office records, correspondence, and subject files; annual financial reports and audited statements; records documenting Lawrence's endowment, properties, and real estate; and bookkeeping records documenting receipt and disbursement of funds.

Most other records in this collection are classified as General University Records and are thus closed for 20 years beyond the date of creation. Acquisition Method:

Annual financial reports dating from 1994 through 2012 were transferred to the Archives by the Office of Financial Services in December, 2012. Digital reports (2009-2014) captured from the website on 2015-07-15.

All other materials acquired prior to 2005.

Related Materials: Records of grants awarded and gifts to the University are filed with Office of Development Records (LU-RG07-005). Records of the Audit, Finance, and Investment committees of the Board of Trustees are filed with Board of Trustees Records (LU-RG02-002).

Sub-Series 1: Samuel K. Wambold, John Bottensek, George W. Jones, and James A. Wood, 1887-1932
Box 7. Wambold, Bottensek, Jones, and Wood each held the position of Treasurer when the position was reserved for a member of the Board of Trustees. Trustee Walter Kasten held this position from 1932 to 1950 - there are no records from his tenure in this subseries.

Box 8-9. Ralph J. Watts was the first Business Manager, a position which held from 1926 to 1950. He also served as Acting President of the University from November 1943 to August 1944 and Vice President/Treasurer from 1950 to 1953.

Box 10-14. Harlan Kirk was Business Manager from 1950 to 1960.

Box 15-17. Marwin Wrolstad was Business Manager from 1960 to 1968, Treasurer and Secretary from 1968 to 1970, and Vice President for Business Affairs from 1970 to 1982.
