Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of the papers of Marie Adams, Milwaukee-Downer College graduate of 1914 and a Red Cross worker imprisoned at the Santo Tomas Internment Camp from 1942 to 1945. It primarily includes Adams' correspondence and writings reflecting on her experiences at the camp.

Collection Historical Note

Marie Adams (1891-1976) graduated from Milwaukee-Downer College in 1914. From 1936 to 1941, she was the Executive Secretary at Milwaukee-Downer. She arrived in Manila in 1941 to serve as the Field Director of Hospital Services for the American Red Cross. She was imprisoned at Santo Tomas Internment Camp from 1942 to 1945, during which time she was one of the head nurses for the camp. After her liberation, she was awarded the Bronze Star Medal “for meritorious achievement while in the hands of the enemy in caring for the sick and wounded.”
