Collection Historical Note

Chester Allen was born in 1889 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was raised in Appleton, Wisconsin and attended Lawrence University from 1909 to 1912, studying chemistry and physics. While at Lawrence, he was a member of both the Chemistry Club and Physics Club, as well as an amateur photographer.

After graduating from Lawrence with a Bachelor of Arts in 1912, Allen received a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois in 1914. He was a research worker in organic chemistry with the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research from 1914 to 1917. He then became an industrial chemist in Cincinatti, and it seems that he spent the remainder of his life there. He married Helen Cullen in 1919. Allen passed away in 1972.
