The house was built to serve as the home of the president in 1881 and served this purpose until 1956 when it began being used for administrative offices. The house was moved forward in 1984.

The house was known as Sabin House and used as a women's dorm after it was purchased by Lawrence in 1954, became a guest house sometime in the 1980s, and was renamed Hulbert House in 2007 after the original Hulbert House was demolished.
