Biographical or Historical Information
The Artist Series was started in by William E. Harper, director of the Conservatory of Music from 1908 to 1913. The first concert was held on November 2, 1908 at the Appleton Theatre. In the early years of the series, invited performers were mostly vocalists and pianists and often included Conservatory faculty, Lawrence ensembles, and community members. Some notable performers with the Artist Series in past years have included Sergei Prokofieff (December 8, 1920), Vladimir Horowitz (April 5, 1930), Marian Anderson (December 5, 1941), Count Basie and his orchestra (April 5, 1974), and Yo-Yo Ma (March 14, 1986). The Jazz Series was first offered in the 1993-1994 season, as an outgrowth of the annual Jazz Celebration Weekend.
