Letters selected by William F. Raney, typescript, 1846-1857
File — Box: 1, Folder: 4-5
Identifier: Folder 4-5
Contains an introduction written by William F. Raney circa 1959, in addition to the transcribed letters, in which he states: "After his death in 1886, [Lawrence's] heirs transferred to Lawrence University, as the college was then called, a considerable body of papers relating to his interests in Wisconsin. Most of them were concerned with his investments in land and kindred matters. Among these business papers, however, were a few letters and documents in which he revealed, all too briefly, what he thought about colleges in general and the particular reasons for his educational enterprise in Wisconsin. These papers, with a few preserved elsewhere, are presented in the following pages."
