This collection contains papers documenting the research and teaching activities of William F. Raney, professor of history at Lawrence University from 1920 to 1955. The bulk of the collection consists of papers related to Raney's research and writing of a history of Lawrence University from 1955 until his death in 1962, including note cards, primary source materials, and drafts. Some materials related to his research and writing of Wisconsin: A Story of Progress and other local, regional and state history research activities are also included. Among the papers Raney gathered for this work is a set of letters and financial documents from the family of Ira J. Smith dating from about 1857 to 1890. A set of 16 scrapbooks created by Raney containing clippings from Wisconsin newspapers dating from 1934 to 1943 is also included in the collection.
