This collection consists primarily of papers documenting Carol J. Butts' time as a student at Lawrence College from 1945 to 1949 and then as a librarian and archivist from 1959 to 2004. Materials date from 1930 to 2004 and include baby, family, and personal photographs, correspondence, letters of recommendation, publications, newspaper clippings, certificates, as well as teaching materials for various courses taught during her graduate and professional career. Three scrapbooks are also included, documenting Butts' time as a student at Lawrence.

Biographical or Historical Information

Carol Butts '49, retired Lawrence University librarian and archivist, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at the age of 76. Carol studied history at Lawrence with Professor William Harper Raney. She attended library school at the University of Michigan, and worked in libraries at Penn State and the University of Wisconsin, before returning to Lawrence in 1959. She worked as a cataloger until 1969. After a brief hiatus (during which she was head librarian at Lakeland College), Carol returned to her alma mater in 1974 as Head of Technical Services. In 1979, Carol was named Assistant University Librarian and University Archivist, a position she held until her retirement in 1993. In her "retirement," Carol was an active member of the Appleton Heritage Society, the city of Appleton Historic Planning Commission and many other organizations.
