George Saunders Papers

The collection is composed of materials documenting Saunders’s academic career and his time at Lawrence University as an Anthropology professor, 1977-2002. Half of the collection contents are in Italian. Box 1 is comprised of field notes and research notes, questionnaires, transcripts of interviews, conference materials, and journal articles. The materials are mostly from 1974-1975. Box 2 contains articles, conference materials, and materials on the India Studies program. Field and research notes and materials from the National Science Foundation are also included in Box 2. Box 3 contains Saunders’s dissertation completed in 1976 at the University of California, San Diego and also contains field notes. Box 4 contains class materials of courses Saunders taught, including Anthropology 33: Language and Culture, Anthropology 44: Anthropology Studies of Mediterranean Europe, and Anthropological Studies of Modern Europe. Box 5 contains Saunders’s dissertation, research materials used for his dissertation, and field notes. Box 6 contains Saunders’s publications, including materials for his dissertation, articles he wrote, and reviews of works he provided. Box 7 contains publications, including portions of a book written by Saunders and research materials used for the book. Box 8 contains course materials from Anthropology 12 and Anthropology 24 that Saunders taught, including lecture notes, syllabi, tests, and handouts. Box 9 contains public lectures and conference papers, including grant applications for the National Endowment for the Humanities and National Science Foundation. Box 10 contains materials on courses Saunders taught, including Anthropology 48: Ethnography of India, Anthropology 52: Social and Cultural Theory, and Anthropology 84: Culture and Mental Health.
