According to a letter enclosed in the scrapbook to Carol Butts, a former archivist at Lawrence University, from Grace E. Haylett Hartlett's daughter Helen H. Isreal: "Grace Eliza Haylett was May Queen, President of her sorority and Phi Beta Kappa. She married Chester Thomas Hartlett, also a graduate of Lawrence and as outstanding. Unfortunately, she contracted encephalitis at my birth and spent thirty-five years in a hospital." Isreal goes on the discuss how her mother's Lawrence College education helped her to stay active mentally through "all those years of inactivity."
