Collection: Homecoming and Fall Festival Collection

The collection contains materials documenting Homecoming, an annual fall tradition held at Lawrence from the early 1900s through 2001, as well as Fall Festival, which replaced Homecoming beginning in 2002. Materials include photographs, programs, dance cards, articles, and correspondence.

Biographical or Historical Information

The annual fall tradition of Homecoming began at Lawrence in the early 1900s. According to William F. Raney's History of Lawrence University, 1847-1925, Homecoming became associated with a football game starting in 1919. By the early 1920s, Homecoming included a dance, parade, competitive decorating of dorms and fraternity houses, and bonfires. Fall Festival was first held in 2002. It represented a combination of traditional Homecoming festivities with the annual Parents' Weekend (or Family Weekend) that had begun in 1960. In 2018, the name of Fall Festival was changed to Blue and White Weekend.

Method of Acquisition

The donor and date the collection was transferred to the University Archives are unknown. It was donated to the University Archives prior to July 2005.

Processing Information

Preliminary processing done prior to 2005, date and processor unknown. Materials were loosely placed in files and added to the Lawrence University Vertical File Collection. Processed by Julia Stringfellow, 2010. Files were removed from the vertical file collection and turned into an artificial collection.
