Biographical or Historical Information

President Smith established the "Analytic Studies Group" in 1970 to study a five-year projection of the University's objectives and needs. The group evolved into the Analytic Studies Committee, a standing committee of the faculty until 1985, focused largely on financial planning. The committee was composed of four faculty members, two students, and two administrators. From the 1979 Faculty handbook: "The Analytic Studies Committee serves at the convenience of the President and is established for the purpose of reviewing departmental and university plans and budgets. Included in the purview of the committee are all matters dealing with the university's budget, expenditure patterns, income, tuition, enrollments, and other financial matters. Traditionally, the committee is charged with recommending to the President a detailed five-year budget for the university which conforms to the parameters specified by the President."
