Biographical or Historical Information
The Volunteer and Community Service Center (VCSC) was founded in 1991 with funding from the Helen Daniels Bader Foundation. Its initial mission was to serve as "a clearinghouse for students to learn about volunteer and community service opportunities in the area." From 1991 until 2007, the center was staffed part-time by a residence hall director along with a team of student interns. The center was located behind the Info Desk in the Memorial Union from 1991 to 2005; in Raymond House from 2005 to 2016; and in the back of the Seeley G. Mudd Library from 2016 to the present.
As of 2018, the VCSC's mission reads, in part: "The VCSC encourages advocacy, service, and learning on the Lawrence campus, connecting Lawrentians to needs in the surrounding community, creating an environment of mutual learning and growth, while providing service to local organizations and individuals. Working collaboratively with the community, we aim to create civically-minded students by building relationships, establishing partnerships, and providing meaningful service."
Method of Acquisition
Accession 2018-06: photographs (prints, albums, and digital) transferred to the Archives by Kristi Hill, 2018-06-19.
Accession 2016-08: Annual reports (2008-2015) and newsletters (1995-2004) transferred to the Archives by Kristi Hill, 2016-06-01. Additional digital records transferred 2018-04-27.
Annual reports, budget materials, and other records from 1991 to 2001 were included in Accession 2007-07.
