Letter from George Thomas to Joseph Hooker

Several skirmishes, including near Tunnel Hill and near Ringgold Gap had taken place in early May with a division of the Army of the Chumberland, led by Thomas advancing east and easily defeating the Confederates at Tunnel Hill. Although a minor battle, it did mark the beginning of the Atlanta Campaign. Note, Thomas is here directing Hooker who had once been commander of the Army of the Cumberland
