Summary Note
The Lawrence College library was located in Main Hall from 1857-1906. Zelia Ann Smith is the librarian pictured behind the desk. She was librarian at Lawrence from 1883 until her death in 1924. The library was located on the second floor of Main Hall. Strict rules were enforced during the early years of the library. Friday night was designated as ladies' night, and during this time, the only male that was allowed into the library was the village postmaster. Freshmen were never allowed inside the library; they were forced to wait outside the door on Saturday mornings and receive their requests through a slot. Students were not allowed to take out more than two books per week.
