Summary Note
On April 22, 1936, 700 Lawrence students intended to march down College Avenue as part of a nationwide anti-war demonstration. Appleton police had revoked their permission for the parade shortly before it was to take place. When one student attempted to cross the line at the corner of College Ave. and Drew St., he was clubbed by police. The incident gained national attention.
