This collection consists of materials documenting honor societies at Lawrence, dating from 1912 to 2009. Files document local societies, such as Mace, as well as chapters of national honor societies, including Mortar Board, Lambda Sigma, and Phi Beta Kappa. Mace was established as a local honor society for senior men at Lawrence in 1911, recognizing outstanding service to the college community. It dissolved in the late 1960s.

A chapter of Mortar Board was established at Lawrence in 1922. At the time it was a national senior women's honor society. The national organization, and Lawrence's chapter by extension, became coeducational in October 1975.

A chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest national honor society in the U.S., was established at Lawrence in 1913 after an extensive campaign by President Samuel Plantz. There were 78 existing chapters in the country at the time.
