Biographical or Historical Information

Today’s convocations are distant relatives of what were originally, in Lawrence’s earliest years, twice daily required chapel services. By 1926, these services were held once daily, and they were called convocations. The name was changed in 1926 to reflect a de-emphasis on religion. During these years, these gatherings were used for sharing announcements and business items. They often included worship-service elements, music performances, and special addresses from faculty or visitors to campus. Over time, convocations became less frequent – instead of daily, they were held weekly, then monthly, and so on. The Convocation series in its current form (a few guest Convocations during the year, bookended by Matriculation and Honors Convocations) was established by the Committee on Public Occasions in 1978-1979.
