Biographical or Historical Information

The Committee on Academic Planning was established by the faculty following a committee restructuring in 1972. From the 1979 Faculty Handbook: "The Committee on Academic Planning considers and recommends action to the faculty and administrative officers of the university on matters related to the long-term academic operations of the institution...assessing the long-range contours of the academic program and seeking to insure its continued strength and excellence. Unlike most other committees, the Committee on Academic Planning has no 'regular' or 'normal' business to consider. In the fall of the year, the committee seeks to establish an agenda for the ensuing year or two from issues brought to its attention by the various constituencies of the university concerned with ongoing academic operations...At the conclusion of each of its considerations, the committee issues a report to the faculty, including, where appropriate, attendant recommendations for action by the faculty." The responsibilities of the Committee on Academic Planning were taken over by the Faculty Committee on University Governance when it was established in 1992/1993.
