First-Year Studies Collection

Scope and Contents The collection consists of materials documenting the history and development of First-Year Studies (formerly Freshman Studies) a required course for first-year students at Lawrence introduced by President Nathan Pusey in the fall of 1945. Correspondence, schedules and reading lists, committee and grant documentation, and other curricular materials make up the bulk of the collection. Documentation on variations of the first-year core program offered during the 1970s is also included.

Reid Abrams and James Cowen Pacific Crest Trail Collection

Scope and Contents This collection contains materials documenting Pacific Crest Trail expedition carried out by Reid Abrams, class of 1977, and James Cowen, class of 1976, from April to September, 1975. Abrams, a biology major, and Cowen, a geology major, hiked 2,500 miles of the trail. Materials include articles, photographs, field reports, and over 100 maps showing the route that Abrams and Cowen hiked.

The work of the committee was supported by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation.  Records consist of meeting minutes, correspondence, and reports (including what became known as the Troyer Report, named for the committee chair, Howard Troyer.)
