Wilson S. Naylor Presidential Papers

This collection is composed of the papers of Wilson S. Naylor, a professor of Biblical literature at Lawrence from 1904 to 1934. Naylor also served as Dean of the College from 1920 to 1934 and Acting President from 1924 to 1925. The bulk of the collection is correspondence sent and received, primarily dating from Naylor’s tenure as Acting President. Subjects discussed include faculty appointments and the controversy surrounding whether or not to allow students to hold dances on campus. Photographs and two photograph albums are also included in the collection.

Biographical or Historical Information

Wilson S. Naylor was born in 1864 and grew up in Kansas. He graduated from Washburn College in 1890 and received his theological degree from Boston University in 1893. He began as a professor of Biblical literature at Lawrence in 1904. He served as Dean of Men from 1910 to 1920, at which point he became Dean of the College. He served in this position until his retirement in 1934. When President Samuel Plantz passed away suddenly in November of 1924, Naylor was appointed Acting President. He served in this position until Henry Wriston began as President in the fall of 1925. After his retirement, Naylor moved to Orlando, Florida. He passed away in 1955.

The donor and date the collection was transferred to the University Archives are unknown. It was donated to the University Archives prior to July 2005.
