The Warren Beck Collection contains materials related to Professor Warren Beck, dating from 1928 to 2000. Materials include letters, memoranda, articles, press releases, newspaper clippings, published works, speeches, teaching materials, and photographs. The materials mainly concern Beck's time teaching at Lawrence and his career as a writer. Additional material donated by Professor Brian K. Beck, a family member of Warren Beck, concerns the "Baldinger affair" (so named by the donor) which took place in 1944. The affair consisted of a debate within and between Lawrence faculty, administration, and the board of trustees about the dismissmal of faculty member Wallace Baldinger, in which Beck was a vocal participant.

This collection contains materials related to Warren Beck, English Professor at Lawrence University from 1926-1968. The materials include correspondence, newspaper clippings, published works, and photographs, dating from 1928-2000.

Biographical or Historical Information

Warren Beck, b. Richmond, IN, 1896, was a World War I veteran and taught as a Professor of English at Lawrence University from 1926 to 1968. He received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Earlham College, in 1956, and an honorary Doctor of Letters from Lawrence University in 1983. He published three novels, four short story collections, and three volumes of literary criticism. Beck died on June 29, 1986.

The source, date, and method of acquisition are unknown. Additional correspondence donated by Gerry Max on 2020 July 15. Material concerning the "Baldinger affair" donated by Brian K. Beck on 2013 November 17.
