229 North Union Street, correspondence, residential data card, and article, 1948-2017

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 28
Identifier: Folder 28
The house was built between 1895 and 1901. Original owner was George McNamee. In 1928, Lawrence purchased the house. Phi Kappa Tau then used it as their fraternity house until the quad was built in 1941. After 1941, Lawrence faculty or staff lived in the house (either as tenants or as owners with special agreements with the university) until 1988, when the university started using the house as small group housing for students. From 1948-1964, the Cloak family owned the house. Ted Cloak was a theatre professor at Lawrence from 1929 to 1969. In 1950, they founded the Attic Theatre (in the house’s attic.) The house was moved from 122 North Union to 229 North Union in July 2017 and repurposed to serve as the residence of the Provost.
