Emily Frances Brown Papers

Scope and Contents The bulk of this collection is comprised of the scripts and programs from the plays that Emily Frances Brown produced and directed as an English professor at Milwaukee Downer College from 1900 to 1945. The collection also contains newspaper articles describing her role in bringing the now famous Christmas song “Twelve Days of Christmas” from England to the United States, as well as photographs and teaching materials.

Scope and Contents The collection consists of materials documenting the history and development of First-Year Studies (formerly Freshman Studies) a required course for first-year students at Lawrence introduced by President Nathan Pusey in the fall of 1945. Correspondence, schedules and reading lists, committee and grant documentation, and other curricular materials make up the bulk of the collection. Documentation on variations of the first-year core program offered during the 1970s is also included.
